Chicago Heights School District 170’s Garfield School presented its annual Cinco de Mayo program in the school gymnasium on Friday, May 5th.
The event was an all-school program celebrating the historic Battle of San Puebla during which, on May 5, 1862, Mexican forces under General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguin earned a spectacular victory over the French army of occupation: a harbinger of Mexico’s independence, still five years away.
Most importantly, however, the Cinco de Mayo celebration at Garfield School continues to serve as an expression of pride in, and a celebration of, the heritage and culture of the Mexican people.
The program included participation by students of all grade levels, and performances featured traditional Mexican folk dances, songs, building decorations, poems, skits, and video presentations.
